Hagen Henrÿ is the research director for the University of Helsinki’s Ruralia Institute in Finland.

From 1971 to 1977, he studied law in Saarbrücken, Germany, and law and French in Geneva, Switzerland, followed by postgraduate studies at the Graduate Institute of Development Studies in Geneva from 1977 to 1978. After studying to become a judge in Germany from 1978 to 1981, Hagen Henrÿ completed a certificat d’études and a diplôme d'études approfondies in development law at Université Paris Descartes in 1982, as well as a law degree in Helsinki in 1993. He then obtained a doctorate in law and was named adjunct professor of comparative law at the University of Helsinki in 2004.

Hagen Henrÿ has published numerous papers on development, land rights, comparative law, and cooperative law issues and has regularly contributed to conferences and seminars in many countries over the past 30 years.

He worked at the universities of Geneva, Saarbrücken, and Helsinki for six years and served as legal advisor to Germany’s federal ministry for economic affairs for eight. He then consulted on cooperative policy and law for many governmental and non-governmental organizations in more than 50 countries. Before joining the University of Helsinki as research director, Hagen Henrÿ was head of the Cooperative Branch of the International Labour Organization in Geneva from 2007 until March 2011.
