CEI announces the publication of the article “Traditional Knowledge for Ecological Sustainability in Ria de Aveiro’s Cultural Ecosystem” in The International Journal of Social Sustainability in Economic, Social, and Cultural Context. https://doi.org/10.18848/2325-1115/CGP/A245
Authored by Clara Sarmento, researcher and Director of the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP–P.PORTO (www.iscap.ipp.pt/cei), this article examines how traditional knowledge systems embedded in the Ria de Aveiro region (Portugal) contribute to ecological sustainability within a complex cultural ecosystem shaped by centuries of human–environment interaction.
The study highlights the value of local ecological knowledge, cultural practices, and community-based heritage as dynamic resources for sustainable development, resilience, and environmental governance. By framing traditional knowledge as both cultural heritage and a living system of environmental expertise, the article reinforces the importance of integrating humanities- and social-science perspectives into sustainability research.
This publication reflects the ongoing research agenda of the Centre for Intercultural Studies, which focuses on intercultural dialogue, cultural sustainability, heritage, and the role of cultural knowledge in addressing global challenges.
CEI invites colleagues and researchers interested in sustainability, cultural studies, and socio-ecological systems to explore this contribution.
