Carina Cerqueira, integrated researcher at the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI), participated in the international conference Speculative Narratives Beyond Consensus Reality: Navigating the Senses from Wonder to Horror, held at the University of Aveiro from 29 June to 1 July 2026.
Carina Cerqueira presented the paper “A Body That Remembers: Wonder, Horror and Resistance in The Handmaid’s Tale”, examining how embodied memory functions as a site of resistance in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian narrative, while highlighting the intersections of gender, power and speculative imagination.
Bringing together scholars exploring the critical and imaginative potential of speculative fiction, the conference provided a stimulating forum for interdisciplinary dialogue on contemporary cultural challenges.
