The Centre for Intercultural Studies’ (CEI) young researcher Gabriel Lourenço participated in the international workshop Cultural Heritage and Visual Representations of India, held in Porto and co-organised by COST Action CA23144 ESIND – Europe’s Representations of India: Texts, Images, and Encounters and ID-SCAPES (ERC Consolidator Grant 101125057).
Bringing together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, the event explored the visual cultures of the Indian subcontinent through critical perspectives on colonial knowledge production, artistic exchange, and global cultural heritage.
Across three intensive days, participants engaged with topics including the circulation of European prints in South Asia, urban cartography and methods for reading historical cityscapes, and photographic collections documenting India’s cultural heritage and Portuguese influence. Practical workshops also challenged participants to develop curatorial concepts for exhibitions based on historical photographic archives.
The programme concluded with a seminar featuring paper presentations introduced by keynote lectures from Ines G. Županov (CNRS, Paris) and Attilio Petruccioli, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on visual representations, heritage, and transcultural histories.
Gabriel Lourenço’s participation reflects the Centre for Intercultural Studies’ commitment to international research networks and to advancing critical approaches to cultural heritage, visual studies, and intercultural exchange.
