Rethinking Knowledge from the Global South: Clara Sarmento to open NEXUS Seminar Series at SUFE, Shanghai, 13 October, 9:30 (PT time)

Clara Sarmento, Director of the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at the Technical University of Porto, will inaugurate the seminar series Knowledge Co-Construction and Dissemination in the Global South, organised by NEXUS – Network for Exchange, Understanding and Synergies, at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), China, on October 13, at 9:30 am (PT time).

Bringing together academics and research teams from SUFE and partner universities in Finland, Australia, Vietnam and Malaysia, NEXUS provides a sustained platform for cross-institutional and cross-regional dialogue, with a particular focus on intercultural communication, language education and knowledge production from Global South perspectives.

In her opening lecture, “Indisciplining Higher Education in the Global South: Co-Constructing Knowledge Across Epistemic Boundaries,” Clara Sarmento will explore how intercultural and decolonial pedagogies can reshape the ways knowledge is produced, validated and shared across cultural and epistemic contexts.

Drawing on interconnected educational and research practices developed at the Technical University of Porto, the lecture will examine how academic, local, community-based and other situated forms of knowledge can enter into dialogue. It will argue that indisciplining higher education involves more than crossing disciplinary boundaries: it also requires questioning epistemic hierarchies and creating conditions for reciprocal knowledge exchange.

The discussion will further consider how situated knowledges can be co-constructed, ethically disseminated and transformed into trans-local knowledge without losing their territorial, cultural and relational grounding.

The lecture concludes by proposing knowledge co-production and radical inclusivity as foundational principles for interdisciplinary, innovative and sustainability-oriented research and teaching, engaging with the challenges and perspectives that shape higher education in the Global South.
