🔹 “Underwater Heritage for Tourism and Development”
Alexandre Monteiro
FCSH-UNova & European University
This masterclass, delivered by maritime archaeologist Alexandre Monteiro, explores the untapped potential of Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) as a strategic driver for Blue Tourism and Sustainable Development. Drawing from decades of field experience and international collaboration, Monteiro presents a multidisciplinary approach to integrating submerged heritage into coastal development strategies that respect both cultural identity and environmental integrity.
Participants will examine real-world case studies where shipwreck sites and underwater archaeological parks have been successfully transformed into sustainable tourism assets. The session will address critical issues such as heritage protection, stakeholder engagement, public access, and the use of digital technologies to enhance interpretation and education.
Emphasis will be placed on policy frameworks, including the UNESCO 2001 Convention, and their practical application in the context of ocean governance, community involvement, and economic resilience. By bridging heritage conservation with the blue economy, this masterclass invites decision-makers, researchers, and tourism professionals to rethink coastal development through the lens of the past – and with a vision for a more inclusive, sustainable future.
