“After the French language studies in Riga, Astra Skrābane chose to pursue academic carrier. From 1976 till 1998 she worked as a lecturer at the University of Latvia, where she was mainly teaching French literature. She did her PhD at the University of Moscow in the field of literary theory. She moved to Ventspils in 1998 where she works at the Faculty of Translation Studies and gives classes in intercultural communication and legal translation. She also works as a freelance translator. Her research focuses on the translation history, translation studies and its intercultural aspects.”

The organization

Ventspils University College (VUC) was founded in 1997 as a self-governing state university college and scientific institution. Its basic activity is to carry out scientific research and to implement academic and professional study programmes.

VUC offers to acquire knowledge in our faculties of Economics and Management, Translation Studies and Information Technologies offering 13 Bachelor, Master and PhD study programmes. Currently, there are approximately 900 full-time students (including international students from countries like Spain, France, Germany, Lithuania, Turkey, etc.), 80% of which are funded from the state budget. On May 20, 2013, VUC acquired scientific institution status (i.e., was added to the Register of Scientific Institutions), which shows that it has met all state-adopted criteria for a scientific body, including at least half of the academic staff has gained a doctoral degree, the university college publishes research papers, it has scientific infrastructure, etc.
