Masterclass “Interpretation of silence in foreign language acquisition: a pragmatic approach”, Gunta Rozina (University of Latvia) | 22 de Novembro de 2013

22 de Novembro de 2013 | 18.30

RESUMO

The presentation focuses on the analysis of silence as a strategy of indirect communication in the foreign language (FL) classroom. It is supported by theoretical contributions which assert that the development of silence in the FL classroom might be determined by several categories of factors. Little research on the development of silence among the English language learners of the Baltic countries, i.e. Latvia has been conducted. The present study was carried out to explore the implicatures underlying silence as the aspect of the communicative behaviour of Latvian students during the process of the English language acquisition. The research results demonstrate that silence can be interpreted as an instrument of indirect communication in the FL classroom. Besides, foreign language learners are influenced by cognitive, pedagogical and pragma-social factors. The presentation ends with a conclusion that the development of silence in the FL classroom depends on numerous factors that vary depending on the communicative situation and the communicative event.
